JAY – Tamara Tuner of Jay has received a scholarship from the Maine Mentoring Partnership. Turner is one of more than 300 students who volunteers as a mentor in the Child Health Center’s Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program.

During the last three years Turner has given one hour a week to mentor a young person at the Jay Middle School.

She said, “A mentor is someone who teaches, advises and looks over another.” Turner has had a special mentee for her three years in the program. Her little sister has been a young girl who is living with a serious illness and Turner explained that in many ways her little has acted as her mentor. Turner said she will always be proud to have been a part of this little girl’s life.

Turner, who graduated from Jay High School in June, has been active in cheering and softball. She plans to study rehabilitation services at the University of Maine in the coming years.

The Child Health Center’s Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Program is the largest in the state and offers traditional matches as well as site-based matches, such the one Turner has participated in.
