Scrabble play

AUBURN – Eleven players attended the second Auburn Scrabble Club meeting on June 12. Three rounds were played, with some of the unrated players scoring more than 300 points in a game: Ariel Gill with 302, Carol Pike with 313, and Kathy Bidwell with 361. Gill and Esther Shapiro has a close game, 302-291.

Gill also had the highest-scoring bingo among the newcomers, a double-double bingo, meaning she played all of her tiles and hit two double word scores at once. Her word “spanning” made more than 90 points and made her the winner of a copy of a book, “Word Freak,” Stefan Fatsis’ best-selling account of life on the tournament Scrabble circuit.

Tournament player and Kennebunk club director Sean McKinney played seven bingos in the course of the evening, most notably “myopias” for 80 points, and the high-probability word “niobates” for 59. A tough game against seasoned tourney player Keith Hagel ended in a 400-399 score in favor of McKinney.

Next meeting will be at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at the Great Falls School. Players should park at the High Street entrance. For further information, contact director Sharon Hawkes at 344-0026, or shazdancer@danceart.net.
