SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners finally solved Pedro Martinez.

The Mariners beat Martinez for the first time in 14 starts, scoring all of their runs in the fourth inning in a 4-1 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night.

Martinez (7-2) allowed four runs and nine hits in six innings, falling to 13-1 all-time against the Mariners. He had been 6-0 with a 0.77 ERA at Safeco Field, and was holding Seattle to a .164 batting average in his career.

Ryan Franklin (3-8) allowed a run and five hits in eight innings to win for the first time since May 8 in Boston. Eddie Guardado pitched the ninth for his 19th save in 20 chances. He is tied with Cleveland’s Bob Wickman for the AL lead.

The bottom of Seattle’s lineup got to Martinez in the fourth. Jeremy Reed led off with a single and went to third on Jose Lopez’s bloop double to right.

Rookie Mike Morse, batting seventh, dribbled an infield single up the middle to score Reed, and Dave Hansen followed with a lined single to right, scoring Lopez.

Martinez struck out Pat Borders and got Ichiro Suzuki to pop out, but Randy Winn hit the next pitch to center for a single to score two more.

Martinez was pulled before the start of the seventh. He struck out seven and walked one, losing for the first time since April 26 against Atlanta.

Franklin got some rare run support, and a heads-up defensive play by Winn in the second helped keep the Mets from taking an early lead.

With two outs and runners on first and second, Doug Mientkiewicz hit a shot just inside the third-base line. Mike Piazza was on second and appeared that he would score easily.

But Winn fielded the ball quickly and threw out David Wright – trying to advance from first to third – before Piazza touched home plate.

The Mets’ only run came in the seventh on Wright’s RBI triple with two outs.

In Franklin’s eight losses, Seattle has scored just 15 runs – seven coming in one game. He broke a four-game losing streak.

Seattle played most of the game without first baseman Richie Sexson and manager Mike Hargrove. Both were tossed in the first inning by home plate umpire Dale Scott after Sexson struck out looking with runners on first and third and one out.

Sexson threw a bucket of balls on the field as he went into the clubhouse.

Notes: Mets 3B Wright made a headfirst leap into the first row of seats down the left-field line to catch Raul Ibanez’s pop up to end the fourth inning. Wright was down momentarily, but got up and led off the fifth. … Lopez started in place of Bret Boone, who will be out of the lineup for the next week to work on his hitting mechanics. … SS Jose Reyes was dropped to second in the batting order for the first time this year, and went 1-for-4. He is now 3-for-21 on the Mets’ road trip.
