Matthew Harnden, son of Diane and Bill Harnden of Auburn, received the Jesse Michael Garbacik Memorial Scholarship during a recognition night for the University of Southern Maine College of Nursing and Health Professions.
The scholarship is awarded to an exercise physiology major who demonstrates excellence in the areas of academic performance, research and service to the Department of Sports Medicine.
The recipient must aspire to continue pursuit of personal, educational and professional goals through graduate-level education.
Harnden, of Portland, is a 2000 graduate of Edward Little High School where he was active in track and football. He is the grandson of Gerard M. Berube of Lewiston. Harnden is employed in the university laboratory this summer.
