BARRINGTON, R.I. (AP) – Brad Faxon rolled in a 6-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole that gave him and partner Sergio Garcia a tie with Chris DiMarco and Fred Funk for the first-round lead at the 36-hole CVS Charity Classic on Monday.
The leading teams each shot 10-under 61 in the medal-play, best-ball tournament at the Rhode Island Country Club. Five teams are tied for second at 7-under 64, including the father-son teams of Craig and Kevin Stadler and Jay and Bill Haas, who won the tournament last year.
“We did a very good job of complementing each other,” Faxon said. He had six birdies, including the 12th, 13th, and 18th holes. Garcia had four, including the 14th and 16th holes.
Garcia, of Borriol, Spain, is making his first appearance in the tournament founded in 1999 by Faxon, a native of Barrington, and Billy Andrade of Bristol.
Funk, who earlier this year won The Players Championship, recorded eight of his team’s 10 birdies, including the 10th, 12th, 13th and 16th holes.
“We were real relaxed,” he said. “I was in trouble on Nine and Chris made a great par putt to keep the momentum going. On 17, I pushed a putt a hair. That was the only putt we should have made that we missed.”
Arnold Palmer combined with Andrade to shoot 4-under 67 and completed his round with a 20-foot putt for par in the 18th hole.
The tournament concludes Tuesday.
