FARMINGTON – A home compost bin with a how-to guide is available through the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District.

The bin is made of 100 percent recycled plastic and has a 10-year warranty. The size is approximately 33 inches high and 33 inches wide or large enough for a family of five. The cost is $36.50.

An estimated 25 percent of the average household’s waste consists of yard trimmings and kitchen scraps, which can be easily composted. Towns may be saved $65 for every ton of waste that is composted because it’s not shipped out of town for disposal.

The compost bins will arrive at the conservation office at 107 Park St. For more information, contact Gail Dolan or Rosetta Thompson at 778-4279.
