LEWISTON – A man was slashed with a knife in an apartment on College Street late Wednesday and a woman was being questioned in the attack.

Police said 44-year-old Bill Smith suffered a gash across one side of his mid-section in the 11 p.m. knifing.

The wound was described as superficial but Smith was being examined by paramedics a half hour after the incident was reported.

It was not immediately known if Smith lives in the apartment at 78 College St. where he was cut. Police found the suspect inside the same building shortly after they arrived.

“We do have someone detained and we are continuing to investigate,” said Lewiston police Sgt. David St. Pierre.

The sergeant said the victim would likely be asked to identify the suspect as the investigation continued.

Smith was conscious and walking around when police and medical crews arrived at the scene. It was not known what led to the attack or if there was a relationship between Smith and the woman suspected of slashing him.

The building where the knifing occurred is at the end of College Street, near the intersection at Sabattus Street.
