NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) – Doug Deeds homered for the third straight game to support a strong outing by Glen Perkins as the New Britain Rock Cats beat the Portland Sea Dogs 9-4 on Tuesday.

The win – the ninth consecutive victory – ties a franchise record set by the Rock Cats in June 1998.

Deeds’ homer, his 13th of the year, gave the Rock Cats a 2-0 lead against Portland’s Jon Lester (7-4) in the third inning. Deeds also had a double in the two-run fifth and an RBI single in the sixth when New Britain went up 7-0.

Alex Romero had two hits and three RBIs and Gabby Torres drove in two runs with a double and a single as New Britain posted double digits in hits (14) for the eighth consecutive game. Gil Velazquez and Denard Span also had two hits each.

Perkins allowed two runs and seven hits over seven innings, walking none and striking out five.

Jim Buckley had two doubles, a single and two RBIs for Portland. Chad Durbin had a pair of doubles.

Lester, who came into the game second in the league with a 2.45 ERA, allowed four runs – two earned – and six hits in 4 2/3 innings.
