HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) – Chad Pennington’s surgically repaired right shoulder will get its first big test of training camp on Monday.

The New York Jets quarterback, recovering from a torn rotator cuff that caused him to miss minicamp and offseason training, was scheduled to throw in both practice sessions – the first time since camp began that Pennington will participate in more than one practice.

“He’s feeling more comfortable throwing the ball and I just want to get him going a little bit more and he wants to do that, too, so we’ll see where he’s at,” coach Herman Edwards said Sunday.

The announcement came a day after Edwards said Pennington would continue to throw only once a day.

“The first week, he practiced five days in a row, then we gave him a day off,” Edwards said. “This week was a little different – one-a-days, now this. He knew it was coming. He knew it was going to be different. We’re progressing him, watching him to see where he’s at.”

Pennington, who participated in Sunday’s 90-minute practice, has generally been throwing only in afternoon practices, gaining velocity and accuracy on his throws.

“He could come out here in the morning and feel OK, and in the afternoon say, Hey I’m a little tired,’ and I might rest it,” Edwards said.

“But I think at this point we’re going to try to do it twice.”

Pennington watched from the sidelines during the Jets’ 10-3 victory over Detroit on Friday night, but said after the game that he was 90 to 95 percent healthy. He also said he fully expects to play in New York’s next preseason game against Minnesota on Friday.

Edwards said he would know by Wednesday whether Pennington will play in the game.

Notes: Fullback Jerald Sowell bruised his ribs against the Lions and was scheduled to have X-rays taken Sunday. Sowell led the team with three catches for 24 yards Friday. Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet (hamstring) and defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson (knee) returned to practice Sunday after missing the game. Wide receiver Jonathan Carter, who missed the last few days of practice with a sore hamstring, was held out again. Linebacker Darrell McClover will have surgery Monday on his broken left leg, suffered in the game against Detroit.
