BETHEL – The 13th annual Bethel Community Picnic was held on the lawn of the Dr. Moses Mason House at noon July 4 with Al Cressey, Bethel Historical Society vice president and trustee board chairman, as master of ceremonies.
Since Oxford County celebrated its 200th anniversary of incorporation on June 11, Oxford County Commissioner Dave Duguay presented a few remarks reflecting on the 229th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and noted that the Oxford County bicentennial quilt would be at Bethel during Sudbury Canada Days on Aug. 12 to 14.
Presentation of the colors was made by the Mundt-Allen American Legion Post 81 Color Guard. Following that, the Portland Brass Quintet played the national anthem and began the two-hour concert.
The event continues a tradition begun by Dr. Moses Mason in the 1850s when townspeople gathered in his grove for a picnic with patriotic addresses and music.
