LEWISTON – John and Cathy Phillips of Toronto, Canada, are announcing the engagement of their daughter, Katherine Young Phillips of Toronto, Canada, to Arthur Ruff of Lewiston, son of George and Nancy Ruff of Lewiston.

The couple met a year and a half ago on a path in the Himalayas. Ms. Phillips was on a holiday from her Kathmandu-based job and Mr. Ruff was nearing the end of his around-the-world trip. They completed the trek together and have been traveling, working and living in Nepal, England, Ireland, Canada and the U.S. since.

Ms. Phillips has just completed a master’s degree in social policy and planning from the London School of Economics in England.

Mr. Ruff graduated from Lewiston High School in 1988 and has taught at Lewiston High School, Gardiner Area High School and will take up a new position teaching at Salem High School in Massachusetts in the autumn.

The wedding is planned for Oct. 9 in Muskoka, Canada.
