PERU – The Summerfest Committee has been working since January to bring this weekend’s neighborhood block party to the village area. The two-day event starts Friday and will bring an outhouse race and a cow chip casino.

For the outhouse race, Committee Chairwoman Yvonne Allen said teams of three to six people will race against each other in the field behind Peru Elementary School. The outhouses must be on wheels and non-motorized. One person will ride inside the outhouse and the rest of the team will push or pull it through an obstacle course. Trophies will be awarded for the fastest time, the most unique creation and for a topic not yet determined. It all depends on the variety of entrants.

The race begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, but first, all participants must take part in Friday night’s parade, set to begin at 6 p.m. on the Ridge Road.

Local farmer Dana Putnam will bring his bull to the back of the school at 3 p.m. Saturday for the cow chip casino. And he, and anyone who takes a chance, will wait for the bull to drop his “chips.” Whoever has bought a ticket for the square where the deposit is made will win half the pot. Allen said 100 tickets are available for $5 each.

Friday night’s talent show will feature children from the school and adults from the area singing, dancing or performing some other entertainment.

The pie auction during the talent show intermission has a unique twist. Whoever pays at least $10 for a homemade pie will get a chance to smash a cream pie in the face of a selected volunteer.

“We started it because people just don’t get together anymore,” Allen said.

“It’s a lot of fun,” she said.
