LIVERMORE – Sports fans and history buffs alike are invited to Livermore on Saturday, Sept. 10, when the Washburn-Norlands Living History Center plays host to the Essex Base Ball Club of Massachusetts.

The game will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. at a site about a half-mile south of Norlands on the Norlands Road.

Organized by the Danvers Historical Society, the Essex Base Ball Club plays according to pre-Civil War era rules, allowing spectators the opportunity to experience firsthand the origins of the country’s favorite pastime.

The lads from Danvers will be dressed in the heavy uniforms of the period and their on-the-field conversation will be peppered with 1860-era base ball jargon.

Accompanying the gents from Massachusetts will be representatives from the Third Maine Regiment, a local civil war re-enactment group. Spectators see a competitive sporting event and a precisely rendered historical re-enactment all at the same time.

The public is welcome to wear 19th-century costume if they like. The cost is $1 a person or $5 a carload. Bring seats. For more information, call 897-4366.
