RUMFORD – Community Concepts is offering classes designed specifically for parents of school age children ages 5 to 12. The free classes are based on the positive parenting curriculum from the University of Michigan and offer helpful tips on subjects such as communication, positive discipline and limit-setting.

Parents will gather in a supportive environment with trained educators, learning parenting tips and sharing real-life issues and solutions.

Terry Cole, parent educator for Community Concepts, said the program provides useful resources for parents to begin using immediately. “You need to use a lot of tools,” she said, “to make a garden grow.”

Classes will begin Tuesday, Sept. 20, and continue on Tuesdays for six weeks from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the Rumford library. There is no charge for the program, sponsored by Community Concepts and partially funded by Western Maine Access Early Learning Opportunity Act Grant.

Community Concepts is a nonprofit organization providing an array of services including Head Start, transportation, housing, heating assistance and parenting education to individuals and families in Oxford, Androscoggin and Franklin counties.

For more information or to sign up, parents should contact Kelly Whitman at the Community Concepts office in Rumford, 364-3721, ext. 6368.
