Hummel Club
LEWISTON – Nor’easter Maine Chapter, M.I. Hummel Club, will hold their first fall meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 12, at the Multi-Purpose Center, 145 Birch St.

Club speaker
AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston Art and Literature Club will meet Monday, Sept. 12, at the Woman’s Literary Union. Dennis Sweetser will speak about “Women and the Civil War.”
Sweetser is a retired chemistry teacher at Edward Little High School. He had three ancestors in the Civil War. Two of them died in the war and his great-grandfather came home.
Sweetser’s father took him to Gettysburg when he was 14 and that was the beginning of his life-long interest in the Civil War. He has a library of 160 books about the Civil War.
Hostesses for the afternoon will be Mrs. Wilfred Godin, Louise Twaddle, Mrs. Raymond Anctil and Mrs. George Bell.
English lunch
AUBURN – Central Maine Community College is inviting members of the community to participate in “English Conversation and Lunch,” a noontime English language experience, on Mondays beginning on Sept. 12.
“Many people in our community are learning English well, but really want to practice with native English speakers,” said Lucinda Coombs, Humanities Department chairwoman and director of the English as a Second Language program.
“We have arranged for an English Language table in our dining commons. Anyone in the community who would like to participate can join us. They can bring lunch, or buy it at the cafeteria. There is no charge and no obligation to attend every week.” For more information, contact Coombs at 755-5317.
Y-ettes meeting
LEWISTON – The Y-ettes will meet at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13, in the Wade Room at the YWCA, East Avenue. All members are asked to attend. Refreshments will be served by Bertha Normand and Audrey Grant.
Pie workshop
DURHAM – The Durham Eureka Community Center will sponsor a pie crust-making workshop at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. The class should be no longer than two hours.
There is a $10 fee, which covers use of all tools, a simple pie crust recipe and the ingredients. The class limit is 10.
If there are more than 10 people interested, a second class will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15. Light refreshments will be served.
