ORONO (AP) – Richmond scored 16 points in the final five minutes of the first half then held Maine scoreless in the second half for a 26-21 win on Saturday night.

The Black Bears (1-2, 0-1 Atlantic 10) appeared to be in control after Montell Owens scored on touchdown runs of 16 and 1 yards, and Kevin McMahan added another score on a 9-yard pass from Ron Whitcomb in the second quarter for a 21-7 lead.

But The Spiders (1-2, 1-1) bounced back behind Stacy Tutt, who threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Josh Vaughan, then scored on a 6-yard run.

Joseph Fore’s 21-yard field goal as time expired in the first half gave the Spiders a 23-21 halftime lead.

Fore’s 19-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter was the onlt scoring in the second half.

Owens finished with 101 yards on the ground.

The Black Bears turned the ball over five times, including three interceptions by Whitcomb, who threw for 200 yards.

Lance Gray had seven tackles and two interceptions for Richmond.

Jarrod Gomes and Jermaine Walker led Maine’s defense with 10 tackles each.
