Once again, the taxpayers of Poland are having their money flushed down the toilet. The transfer station should have had bathroom facilities and an emergency drench shower, for chemical spills, a long time ago.

The obscene price for this project is more than the taxpayers should have to bear. A majority of the Poland Board of Selectmen blindly followed the town manager’s recommendation and awarded a contract for $38,000 for the shell of a building that I could not fit my truck in. The taxpayers will bear the costs of a well, septic system, electrical work, concrete and all site work. The taxpayers were also led to believe that the project was “put out to bid.” Too bad for us that that it wasn’t. We will have a glorified shed with a toilet and sink.

Oh, I almost forgot. A hot water shower will be installed for the low price of $3,800 or more, above and beyond the original price. Apparently the drench shower would be the same price, although the town manager does not understand why. But he recommends it, although no explanation of costs was given to the board or, supposedly, to him.

The board needs to wake up, reconsider and make sure that our money is spent the way it should be, not flushed down the toilet.
