OLD TOWN (AP) – Friends of two teenagers killed in a collision on their way to Old Town High School held a candlelight vigil as they grieved their loss.
The driver who received her license little more than three weeks earlier pulled out of a driveway and into the path of the cement truck, police said.
A passenger, Ryan Worcester, 17, of Old Town, died at the scene and the driver, Lindsey Almenas, 16, from Indian Island, died shortly after arriving at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, police said. The driver of the cement truck was not hurt.
“Both were very well-liked and had a wide circle of friends,” Old Town Principal Joseph Gallant said of the two students. Worcester, a senior, played basketball, while Almenas, a junior, participated in spring track.
Students were notified at school, and they gathered for a vigil Wednesday evening.
The school’s crisis response team, which consists of guidance counselors from Old Town and other school districts, private practitioners, clergy and other officials, was put in place to help students deal with the loss.
Counselors will be on hand all week, Gallant said. “When you lose two very popular students, it’s never easy,” he said.
