RUMFORD – The residents of River Valley Village joined to organize an organic community garden, later named “River Valley Community Garden.” Garden club members said residents volunteered with hard work and outside volunteers and businesses donated materials and expertise to make the garden a reality.

Residents spread compost, rototilled, erected a fence around the garden, assembled containers and a tool shed, weeded and planted a variety of vegetables, including corn, pole beans, radishes and tomatoes. Weeding and watering is an ongoing effort.

The volunteers built garden containers to accommodate those who are disabled. The pallet gardens allow residents with limited mobility to have access to all sides of their garden without bending or stooping over.

The garden is growing and the garden members are looking forward to many successful years.
