NORWAY – Stone-Smart Post, American Legion, and Auxiliary met on Sept. 14 with President Kim Hansen presiding.
Hansen gave a report of the Department of Maine Convention, announcing the awards the unit received: Rose Moulton, Auxiliary Person of the Year; a plaque for outstanding Americanism report; VA&R and VAV certificate of appreciation for support of veterans; certificates of appreciation for 100 percent membership; certificate of appreciation for home service; certificates of participation for poppy display and history display; and certificates for field service to Ethel LaCourse, Chris Weiss, Marion Millett and Stone Smart Unit.
Marjy Sessions reported on membership, noting she has added several new members.
Finance Committee members Rose Moulton, Marjy Sessions and Joyce Clifford presented a list of proposals to be considered. Members voted to pay every other month’s electric bill and the cost of newsletter mailed out each month.
It was voted to give the Kitchen Committee and chaplain the right to spend money for supplies without a membership vote. The committee proposed supporting community projects in the Norway area, as well as department projects.
Barbara Henley gave a Americanism report on Mrs. Ellis and her second-grade flag program. Ellen Snow gave a report of donations to Community Concepts, consisting of baby items, sports equipment and clothing. Chaplain Christine Weiss reported she had sent out 11 cards over the summer.
Hansen noted the Rumford unit was not doing the veterans’ birthday party and swapped the January date with Rumford. Marjy Sessions and Mary Tolman will do the shopping. The charter was draped for Eileen Russon.
Members voted to give $100 to Hurricane Katrina Relief. It was sent to Lucille Allen’s son, Michael, who lives in Gulfport, Miss., and has been helping people obtain food and water.
It was voted to help Second District President Connie Tutlis by supplying items for a raffle to raise money for her project for the year. Members also voted to pay all assessments, donate to the Rena Howe Scholarship fund and to purchase 1,000 poppies.
The meeting was preceded by a potluck supper with Marilyn Jones as chairwoman, Joyce Clifford and Kim Hansen assisting and Marguerite Riley cutting pies.
