FRYEBURG – Alice Burgess of New Gloucester was judged best overall in the Fryeburg Fair’s two-crusted apple pie contest Thursday.

Norma King of Lovell won for best filling, while Rhetta Russell of New Gloucester won for best crust. Melanie Farrington of Lovell had the best specialty pie while 11-year-old Chase Boothby of Hollis won in the best youth category.

Judging this year’s event, which attracted 17 entries, were Ray Leavitt of Leavitt’s Bakery in Conway, N.H. and Kate Milbury from the Peace With-Inn bed and breakfast in Fryeburg.

The contest was open to amateur bakers from Maine and New Hampshire. The pies were judged in five categories with a total of four points possible in each: ease of preparation, texture, flavor of filling, crust and overall appearance. Burgess received $75 while the others each get $25.

Earlier in the week, Stephanie Tinker of Buxton won the blueberry pie contest. Deidra Brilyea of Jefferson, N.H., was second and Debra Carter of Denmark was third. There were seven entries in this new contest.

In the Parent-Child Baking Contest, Katie Russell, 13, and parent Linda Russell of Fryeburg won with peaches and cream cheesecake cupcakes.

Second place went to Zachary Whitley, 11, and parent Korilyn of North Conway, N.H., for apple pattycakes. Third was Delaney, 8, and grandparent Jo-Ann Jones of North Conway for chocolate pumpkin cupcakes.

Sunday’s whoopie pie contest was won by Stephanie Tinker of Buxton, whose maple pumpkin whoopie pies were judged best overall.

Karen Hastings of Greene had the best filling with her peanut butter whoopie pies, while Judy Lawrence of Windham won best specialty with her sugar-free pumpkin recipe. Best junior was Savannah Whitley, 11, of North Conway for her light and tasty whoopie pies. There were 16 entries in this contest.
