RUMFORD – A 10-year-old girl sustained minor injuries Wednesday afternoon when the 1997 Saturn station wagon she was riding in collided with a 1998 Nissan sedan at the intersection of Maine Avenue and Hancock Street.

Stacy Steward, 30, of Route 108, Rumford, was driving west on Maine Avenue with her daughter, Misty, when her vehicle collided with a Nissan at the intersection.

The Nissan, driven by Sharon Dawson, 58, of Kennebec Street, Rumford, was heading south on Hancock Street. She struck Steward’s vehicle on the passenger side, causing both cars to spin, said Rumford officer Doug Maifeld.

The Nissan came to rest in the middle of the intersection while the Saturn plowed into a stop sign and came to rest on an embankment.

The Saturn sustained between $3,000 and $4,000 damage while the Nissan sustained about $2,000 damage, said Maifeld.

The Rumford Fire Department and Med-Care Ambulance responded to the accident. Med-Care took the girl to Rumford Hospital, where she was treated and released. Maifeld was assisted by officers Dan Garbarini and Paul Casey.

Traffic was tied up for about 30 minutes.
