HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) – Jets center Kevin Mawae will miss the rest of the season after tearing his left triceps against Buffalo.

Mawae was hurt in the third quarter of a 27-17 loss Sunday when Sam Adams fell on his elbow. Mawae returned to the game for one series, but couldn’t push off. Coach Herman Edwards said Monday an MRI exam confirmed the injury, and Mawae will have surgery next week.

The six-time Pro Bowl selection had started 177 straight games, third among active players behind Packers quarterback Brett Favre and Chiefs guard Will Shields.

Losing Mawae is a huge blow to the Jets (2-4), who already have lost quarterback Chad Pennington for the season. Backup QB Jay Fielder (shoulder) and backup running back Derrick Blaylock (foot) also are out for an extended period.

“It’s always hard to lose good players, he’s a Pro Bowl caliber player. He’s been a good player here his whole career,” Edwards said. “We’re going to miss him, there’s no doubt about that. We’ve lost some players already. I’m not all of a sudden going to make it a gloom and doom situation.”

Cornerback Ty Law is questionable for Monday night’s game at Atlanta with lower back spasms, and backup safety Oliver Celestin is questionable with a left knee injury. There was one bit of good news: linebacker Eric Barton should play after missing the last three games with a sprained ankle.
