NORWAY – Stone-Smart American Legion Auxiliary 82 met on Oct. 12 with President Kim Hansen in charge. They hosted Girls State candidates Emily Denison and Miranda Olmstead, who gave reports on their activities and what they learned. Tiffany Stevens was unable to attend.

Department of Maine historian Charlotte Wing brought greetings from the department and gave a report on happenings in the auxiliary. Two new members were welcomed and presented with membership pins: Joyce Gouin and Jean Millett.

Membership Chairwoman Marjy Sessions noted that membership has reached 94 percent. Barbara Henley, Americanism chairwoman, has asked Karen Ellis to attend the November meeting and show a video of her flag program held last June. Henley will place a banner on the building on Veterans Day and other patriotic days.

Lucille Allen gave a report of Katrina donations. Her son found a teacher who needs help. The school was destroyed and she needs supplies for her temporary fourth- grade classroom. Unit members voted that it was a worthwhile project.

Hansen noted that the department and District 2 presidents will visit the unit on Nov. 4. Norway will bring hot dishes. South Paris, West Paris, Oxford and Fryeburg units will attend.

The unit will march in the Veterans Day parade on Friday, Nov. 11. Rose Moulton and Joyce Clifford will bear the flags, Joyce Gouin and Theresa Dodge will be guards.

The Auxiliary will serve coffee and doughnuts.

The National American Legion Auxiliary has asked that units now have poppies available throughout the year. The Norway unit will be at Lake Store and Wal-Mart on Saturday, Nov. 5, and at Rite Aid on Nov. 11.

The charter was draped for member Helvi Morrill.

The following donations were voted: Togus Christmas Gift Shop, $100; Western Maine Veterans Home Christmas Gift Shop, $100; Beals House at Togus, $50; Androscoggin Home Health, $50; and Ronald McDonald House, $25.

The meeting was preceded by a chicken pie supper, chaired by Marjy Sessions and Carol Labossiere, with help from Marie Pingree and Rose Moulton.
