SOUTH PARIS – The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office is seeking applicants for a new patrol deputy to fill a slot that will be vacated when one of its employees becomes the new school resource officer for SAD 55.

Lt. Christopher Wainwright said last week he hopes the new patrol deputy and the school resource officer can begin their jobs in January.

The application deadline for the patrol deputy position is Nov. 4.

According to Wainwright, the sheriff’s office is receiving a portion of a $2.85 million federal grant awarded to SAD 55 by the U.S. Justice Department.

The Oxford County commissioners approved acceptance of the funds last week.

The money will cover the school resource officer’s salary and benefits, as well as equipment and the cost of a new police cruiser. The money covers the position for a period of three years.

“Many other school districts in Maine, including SAD 17 (in Oxford Hills) already have school resource officers,” Wainwright said.

The salary plus benefits in the first year of the position will range from $46,520 to $52,903.

Wainwright said the school resource officer will ensure safety for all students, act as a peer mentor, attend after-school activities and possibly do some classroom instruction in the future.

An employee in the sheriff’s office is being considered for the job; therefore, the sheriff’s office is advertising for applicants for the new patrol deputy position, the lieutenant said.
