FARMINGTON – Literacy Volunteers will hold the Fall Scrabble Contest from 1 to 3:45 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, in Ricker Hall Addition, Rooms 202 and 205, University of Maine at Farmington.

Registration will begin at 12:30 p.m. and the contest will be followed by the awarding of prizes, including a chance to win the book, “Death by Spelling.”

Participants may preregister by calling Literacy Volunteers at 778-3460 or mail the registration to Literacy Volunteers, 108 Fairbanks Rd., Farmington, ME 04938. Preregistration is $6, or $5 for seniors and students. It is $1 more to register at the door.

All are welcome. There will be goodies and prizes.

There are more than 100,000 adults in Maine who have difficulty reading, and Literacy Volunteers addresses the problem by training tutors to teach those adults to read and to function more fully in society. Last year the volunteers worked with more than 100 students in Franklin County.

LV tutors are all volunteers but LV needs to cover expenses for part-time staff, travel expenses and books, dictionaries, workbooks and supplies for students.
