Chamber of Commerce President Charles “Chip” Morrison was one of three speakers at the Sept. 22 forum held at Lewiston-Auburn College. The speakers spoke of why they will be voting against the referendum to repeal Maine’s new anti-discrimination law.
One questioner asked, how was it that 450 signatures were obtained for the referendum at the recent trade show in Lewiston. Morrison’s answer was that it was his experience that people would sign just about anything.
Businessmen and women would sign just about anything? Hardly an answer one would expect to hear from the Chamber of Commerce president. If Morrison hopes to attract businesses to Maine, why would he put down our businessmen and women by such a thoughtless remark?
I was present outside the Colisee for the referendum signing. I can tell you sincerely that before people signed the petition sheet, they carefully considered their decision to do so. They asked questions and took time to learn about the referendum before they signed their name. The petitioners explained in detail why their signature was vital for everyone’s benefit and protection. This took time and effort on behalf of the petitioners, who gladly put forth this effort.
Contrary to what Morrison said, it tells me that 450 signatures in favor of the referendum show they believe that special protection based on sexual orientation is not in the interest of the state of Maine.
