Road building doesn’t jump to the top of the list when we think about a recreation department that’s looking for volunteers.

Coaching, refereeing, lining a field – sure. But building a road?

The Minot Recreation Department put the call out that it needed help building a 1,500-foot road from Shaw Hill Road, near the Minot Consolidated School, to 25 acres of land that will become sports fields.

They got a great response. In just 10 hours on Sept. 10, the crew of volunteers moved more than 2,000 cubic yards of material and built an access road to the fields.

Sports fields and recreation departments are about having fun, but they also take a lot of hard work and commitment. The Minot community showed that it’s capable of both.
