PORTLAND (AP) – Dustin Penner and Curtis Glencross scored and Portland’s tight defense stymied Lowell as the Pirates beat the Lock Monsters 2-1 on Saturday night.

Portland goaltender Gregg Naumenko stopped 15 of the 16 shots he faced in his Pirates debut.

Portland (7-3-0-0) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first period when Penner netted his fourth goal of the season at 13:13 on a shot from just outside the crease. Glencross scored from the left circle to make it 2-0 at 16:34 of the second.

The Lock Monsters (6-5-0-0) drew to within one when Craig Adams stepped out of the penalty box, took a feed from David Gove and beat Naumenko one-on-one with three seconds remaining in the period.
