FRISCO, Texas (AP) – MLS scoring leader Taylor Twellman was selected the league’s MVP on Thursday, three days before the New England Revolution forward is to play in the MLS Cup against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Twellman is only the third U.S.-born player to win the award and first in five years, joining Tony Meola and Jason Kreis. He also was the All-Star Game MVP in July.

Twellman had 17 goals this season. He led the league in scoring in 2002, his rookie season, with 23 goals and six assists.

He scored his first goal for the U.S. national team during a 2-0 World Cup qualifying victory over Panama last month. He played in five games for the national team this year.

Twellman’s father, Tim, and uncle Steve played in the old North American Soccer League. His uncle Jay Delsing is a member of the PGA Tour, and his grandfather Jim Delsing played major league baseball, pinch-running for 3-foot-7 Eddie Gaedel in 1951.
