Nutrient workshop

ORONO – Dec. 1 is the registration deadline for University of Maine Cooperative Extension’s nutrient management workshop. Farmers who had nutrient management plans certified in 2000 must be recertified by December. The event is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 8, at the Bessey Municipal Building in Albion.

The workshop will focus on the changes that have occurred in nutrient management planning at the state and federal level since 2000 and how the changes can be incorporated in a plan.

For more information or to request a brochure, contact Extension Educator Mark Hutchinson at 1-800-244-2104 or e-mail [email protected]. The training costs $5 a person including lunch. Preregistration is required for an accurate lunch count.

Skiers needed

NEWRY – Maine Handicapped Skiing still needs volunteers for 2006. New volunteers are required to take three days of training and are asked to donate 10 days of volunteer time working with program participants at four possible locations: Sunday River Ski Resort, Sugarloaf/USA, Sunday River Inn and Cross Country Ski Center, and Pineland Farms in New Gloucester.

Volunteers receive a complimentary ski/trail pass for every day they volunteer during the season, from Jan. 3 until the end of March.

Other types of volunteers are also needed. Snowmobiles are used to transport participants around the mountain and experienced snowmobilers are needed to assist participants. Photographers and videographers are needed to take photos and videos at all four locations.
