NEW YORK (AP) - A Thanksgiving Day fire at an apartment building in Brooklyn seriously injured three people, including a 16-year-old girl who jumped from the third floor in an attempt to escape.
A fire lieutenant was also hospitalized with burns but was expected to recover.
The blaze was discovered at 6 a.m. on the third floor of a six-story building in the borough’s Flatbush section.
A 40-year-old woman and 58-year-old man were sickened by smoke. The teenage girl was hurt in the fall. All three were hospitalized in serious condition, said Fire Department spokesman Charles Markey.
Fire marshals suspected that the blaze began when a space heater overloaded an extension cord.
Firefighters had the flames under control within 45 minutes. The injured firefighter was identified as John Galan, 44, a 24-year veteran of the department.
Several apartments in the building were damaged. It was not immediately clear how many of the building’s residents would be allowed to return home for the holiday.
