HARRISON – A woman died early Saturday morning after she was found unresponsive at an apartment on 26 Vacationland Road and taken to a hospital.

Nancy Allen, 29, of Harrison, was pronounced dead upon arrival at Bridgton Hospital around 3:15 a.m., Capt. Bill Rhodes of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department said Monday. The cause of her death is unknown, he said.

Allen was with several people at the apartment of Brian Freese, 26, and John Ireton-Hewitt, 33, when she lost consciousness, Rhodes said. Police interviewed some of the people with her at the apartment, as well as people who had seen her earlier in the evening at local bars.

According to Rhodes, a female with Allen attempted to call 911 from her cell phone after realizing that Allen could not wake up, but the call did not get through to dispatch.

Rhodes said cell phone coverage in that area is spotty. The owner of the apartment has no land line, a choice that is becoming more common as cell phone use grows, he said.

Because an ambulance could not be summoned, two men with Allen drove her to the hospital, but she had already died by the time she arrived, a doctor told police.

An autopsy and toxicology report from the medical examiner’s office are expected in a week or so, and they are expected to reveal more clues to the cause of Allen’s death, Rhodes said.
