NEWMARKET, N.H. (AP) – Fire officials are inspecting apartment buildings in the town after a fire in a building that had no smoke alarms.

Eight people were left homeless in Sunday’s fire. A volunteer firefighter happened to be visiting overnight and awoke to the flames and smoke.

Deputy Fire Chief Richard Clark said if the firefighter had not alerted everyone, the fire could have been a disaster.

The landlord could face charges and Clark said the fire department will inspect all apartment buildings in town to make sure they have working smoke alarms.
