NORTH READING, Mass. (AP) – A 72-year-old man apparently shot and killed his wife inside their North Reading home before turning the gun on himself in what appears to be a murder-suicide, authorities said.

Their identities were not immediately released pending notification of family.

A neighbor called 911 at about 2:40 p.m. on Thursday afternoon after hearing gun shots at the home on Country Club Road, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office.

Police responding to the scene spoke briefly to a man outside the house before he went back inside, the district attorney’s office said. After the officers heard another shot, they entered the house and found the bodies of the man and 65-year-old woman both dead of apparent gunshot wounds.

Autopsies are being conducted. The deaths remain under investigation.
