MEXICO – To meet its customers’ holiday mailing needs, the Mexico post office has extended its Saturday business hours.

Postmaster Jack Kaubris said it will be open two hours later, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the next three Saturdays, Dec. 10, 17 and 24.

“We want to make using the post office quick, easy and convenient for our customers, especially during the hectic holiday season,” he said Monday in a news release.

Additionally, on Monday through Friday, the office is to remain open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through Christmas. Normally, it closes for employees’ lunchtime from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Kaubris said.

“This is our crazy time,” Kaubris said of the Christmas rush.

The first and second Mondays of December are traditionally the Mexico post office’s busiest days.

“Our letter volume explodes with Christmas cards being sent,” he added.

This Monday was the busiest day so far, with more than 100 packages sent. Normally, he said, the volume is from 30 to 40 packages a day.

The decision to extend hours is done on an office-by-office basis, Kaubris said.

“We are very busy throughout the extra hours,” he said.

That’s one reason why he has suggested to customers that they take advantage of the service’s Web site at www.usps.com.

“You can buy stamps, use Click-N-Ship to print your own mailing labels, pay for postage and confirm delivery. You can even request a package pick-up at your home or office when your daily mail is delivered, for no extra charge,” he stated in the release.

“I want to encourage people to go to that site, especially the kids who are more into that than I am,” he said late Tuesday afternoon.
