BUCKFIELD – Selectmen decided Tuesday night to rent a skid steer for sidewalk snow removal after hearing about five options presented by Town Manager Glen Holmes.

Chairman Oscar Gammon asked Holmes to look for a source of funds because the board wasn’t in favor of holding a special town meeting to ask for the funds.

Holmes said he’d investigate other rentals to see if any were available at a cost less than the $3,400 option presented. The rental would be at a four-month minimum or $850 per month.

During the long discussion over what if anything should be done for sidewalks, Dick Piper asked the board, “Is this town pro-business or not? If you are, then you should clear the sidewalks.”

When the Route 117 project is completed, there will be more sidewalks and other choices will be reviewed. Contracting out the work or having the town purchase its own equipment were among the other options.

In other business, Holmes gave an update on court proceedings over junkyards. Graham Bell has paid his penalty and has an extension until June 1 to move his autos and junk. Roger Bennett has 60 days to comply, and James Bishop has requested a trial by jury.

At a special town meeting held at 7 p.m. the town voted to accept the gift of a 500-gallon tanker refurbished from an old Army truck.

The board accepted the resignation of the Buckfield Rescue Chief Tony Lord, who has been activated for service in Afghanistan. They voted to appoint Assistant Chief Lisa Buck to replace Lord.

The board also accepted the resignation of Joanne Bly from the Planning Board and reappointed Charles Brown to the Road Committee.
