UNIONDALE, N.Y. – Alexei Yashin and Trent Hunter scored in a shootout and the New York Islanders snapped a three-game losing streak at home by beating the Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Saturday night.

Hunter’s won it on the final shot of the shootout after Rick DiPietro stopped Edmonton’s Ryan Smyth.

Hunter and Arron Asham scored power-play goals in regulation for New York. DiPietro made 26 saves.

Fernando Pisani and Chris Pronger scored for the Oilers, 7-2-2 in their last 11 games. Jussi Markkanen stopped 22 shots.

Pronger tied it with 64 seconds left in regulation on Edmonton’s eighth power play. He was left alone in the slot, took a pass from Ales Hemsky, and wristed a shot past DiPietro.

Hunter scored earlier in the period to give New York a 2-1 lead. Parked in the slot, Hunter got a piece of defenseman Chris Campoli’s toss at the net, redirecting the puck by Markkanen.

Edmonton dominated the first period, and took a 1-0 lead at 13:31. Pisani’s shot from the lower right circle hit DiPietro and went in.

DiPietro faced seven shots before the goal and made consecutive fine stops on Hemsky and Smyth.

In the second period, Markkanen robbed Jason Blake by making a glove save on his wrist shot that appeared to be ticketed toward an open net at 15:35. Just 14 seconds later, Asham got a piece of Brad Lukowich’s center point shot for the tying goal.

Asham’s fifth of the season, came on New York’s fourth power play. It came while former Islanders captain Michael Peca was serving a slashing penalty. It was Peca’s first game against New York since being traded to Edmonton during the offseason.

Notes: Edmonton have lost four straight games on Long Island. The Oilers’ last road win over the Islanders was Dec. 14, 1999. … Peca, who played three seasons for the Islanders before he was traded for Mike York, received a nice ovation from the crowd of 12,249 after the first stoppage of play. … New York is 6-5-1 at home, and has been outscored 44-38 there.
