DIXFIELD – The Adult Reading Group of the Ludden Memorial Library met from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Dec. 6 in the downstairs community room. Tea and coffee were served.

The first novel discussed was by author Martha Grimes. On the new arrivals shelf, it is titled “Belle Ruin,” the third in a series, which takes place post-World War II South.

The main character is Emma Graham, a 12-year-old sleuth who is smarter, funnier and more devious than most grown-ups. When Emma isn’t waiting tables at the Hotel Paradise, she is left alone to investigate local mysteries everyone else has long forgotten. The little snoop has already made a name for herself in Hotel Paradise and Cold Flat Junction.

The Mitford Series by Jan Karon was discussed. Members believe the series is warm and enjoyable for all types of readers. “Light From Heaven” is the newest book in this series and was added to the new arrivals shelf in November. Although the series does not have to be read in order, it is advised.

“Toxic Bachelors,” Danielle Steel’s newest novel, was brought up for discussion. Although Steel is a more popular author, the reader did not find this book one of her best. It was repetitious and more of a “bodice ripper.” There has been a long list of those waiting for this book. It will be interesting to see what others think.

James Patterson has done it again with his newest, “Mary, Mary.” The library has two copies of the book and they have waiting lists. In the novel, Alex Cross is again being called away from a vacation with his family.

A top actress has been shot outside her home in Beverly Hills. Shortly afterward, an editor from the Los Angeles Times received an e-mail recounting the murder in shocking detail. The murderer signs it “Mary Smith.”

The authorities fear this is only the beginning. More killings follow, and more e-mails arrive immediately after. Mary Smith is targeting Hollywood stars and power brokers, and she is getting better every time. As the a novel claims, it is filled with shocking twists that attract readers. It is a hold-on-to-your-seat read.

The Adult Reading Group meets the first Tuesday of each month, rain or shine. All adults are welcome. One does not have to be a library patron to join the discussion. The next meeting will be Jan. 3.
