FARMINGTON – The University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service will offer a training program, “Become a Master Gardener Volunteer,” in January.

The minimum 40 hours of in-depth training for Franklin and Somerset counties will begin Jan. 13 and will run through May 5. Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Fridays in Farmington.

The 2006 program concentrates on vegetables, tree fruits and small fruits and includes a 500-page reference manual. The course, taught by expert instructors, will also give students time to interact with other Maine gardeners and the opportunity to do volunteer activities to teach others about gardening. The cost is $90.

For more information and an application, call the University of Maine Franklin County Extension Office at 778-4650 or 1-800-287-1478. Deadline to submit application is Friday, Dec. 30.
