NEWRY – Visitors to Sunday River Ski Resort can literally horse around during College Week festivities next week.

The full eight-horse hitch of the famous Budweiser Clydesdale horses are to make their first appearance at the resort from 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4, said resort spokesman Alex Kaufman on Monday.

Accompanying the famous Scottish equine descendants are an almost 4-ton Budweiser Brewery wagon that the giant draft horses tow, and a Dalmatian dog, which is usually seated next to the driver atop the wagon’s load.

Once known as the “coach dog,” the Dalmatian has a history of being a companion to horses, and was also trained to protect the horses and the wagon when the driver went inside to make deliveries, Kaufman said in a press release on Monday.

To be selected for the Budweiser Clydesdale hitch, horses must meet certain characteristics, which include being at least 3 years old, standing 6 feet at the shoulder and weighing about 2,000 pounds, the release stated.

Kaufman said the full Budweiser Clydesdale show schedule of appearances are subject to change, but are available at www.sundayriver.com or by calling 824-3000 or 824-5243.
