FARMINGTON – Sexual Assault Victims Emergency Services’ year-end statistics for 2005 include 67 sexual assaults reported to the agency, the rape crisis center for Franklin County, Oct. 1, 2004, to Sept. 30, 2005.

The majority of victims were teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14 and 21. Acquaintance rape, date rape, incest and child sexual abuse were the main types of assaults committed. There are many people who do not report beyond SAVES, and some who do not report at all.

SAVES provides a safe environment for victims, survivors and loved ones to get support and information. All services are free.

The following information is an outline that portrays the amount of contacts hours and individuals reached through the 24-hour Rape Crisis Hotline, support groups and community and school-based educational and outreach programs.

Crisis intervention work

Total number of client contacts, 1,148; total number of contacts with law enforcement, medical providers, teachers or others on behalf of clients, 611; hours of direct client support, 871; hours of advocate consultation on behalf of clients, 309; new clients, 113.

Support groups

Number of support group contacts, 269; number of support group hours, 94.

Education/outreach programs and trainings for professionals

Forty-four education programs were presented to 945 school students, totaling 39.25 hours; 23 outreach and education programs were presented to the general community, post-secondary institutions and professional groups, totaling 90.5 hours; 8,866 sessions logged at SAVES’ Web site, www.savesrapecrisis.org.

Information about assaults reported to SAVES

Of those who contacted SAVES, 71 percent were seeking support after having been sexually assaulted; 29 percent were family members, friends or others.

From Oct. 1, 2004, to Sept. 30, 2005, 67 assaults were reported to SAVES; 95.5 percent of those reported assaults were of girls or women; 4.5 percent were boys or men.
