BAR MILLS – The Originals, the resident theater company at the Saco River Grange Hall, has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the Maine Community Foundation’s Theatre Fund, recently established to strengthen and sustain live theater in Maine.

Jennifer Porter and Dana Packard founded The Originals in 1988. Since 1990, the company has produced 49 plays and musicals at the Saco River Grange Hall.

The Grange Hall, 29 Salmon Falls Road, was built as a Universalist Chapel in 1897. It became privately owned by a local family in 1990, when it opened as an interdisciplinary community cultural center, and became a nonprofit corporation in 1994. Its mission to encourage and preserve local culture includes offering music and theater, focusing on local, regional and Maine talent.
