NAPLES – A state trooper and his police dog were injured Friday morning when his cruiser and a sport utility vehicle collided nearly head-on on Route 302 in Naples, Maine State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said.

Trooper Michael Smith, 33, of South Casco, was flown by helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. He sustained multiple injuries and is likely to be hospitalized for several days, McCausland said.

His Labrador retriever had minor injuries and was treated by a veterinarian.

The driver of the sport utility vehicle, Maureen Simmons, 35, of Naples, was treated and released from Bridgton Hospital.

McCausland said it appears Simmons pulled in front of Smith’s cruiser when attempting to turn into Naples Pharmacy around 9:30 a.m.

No charges have been filed, and the accident is under investigation.

Smith joined the state police in 1998 and has patrolled in Oxford and Cumberland counties.
