OXFORD – A local business handed the town a check for $10,267.26 it raised at its annual car show at Oxford Plains Speedway.

VIP Parts, Tires and Service raises the money by soliciting $2 donations from visitors to the VIP Show, Shine and Drag event, which the company has been putting on for 24 years.

John Quirk, president and chief executive officer of VIP, said his company started the tradition of handing Oxford a check four years ago to help ease the town’s burden of hosting the event. The show attracts many visitors+ and roads get clogged with traffic.

“I got stuck in a traffic jam eight miles away,” Quirk admitted to a group of local officials who gathered at the Oxford Public Safety Building on Route 26 Wednesday to accept the money.

In past years, VIP has raised between $9,000 and $18,000. Next year, Quirk said he will try to raise $25,000 for the town to match the show’s 25th anniversary.

The town has spent past donations on safety equipment, officials said.
