Service night

LEWISTON – Lewiston Post 22, American Legion, will hold a service night during the regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at the former Legion home, 190 Bates St.

Joseph Paradis, trustee and service officer, said a representative of the state veterans home in Augusta will be the guest speaker. A question-and-answer period will follow.

Paradis went to the Department of Veterans Affairs in Togus and returned with information concerning veterans’ benefits. Brochures on many subjects will be available. All veterans are invited to attend. Dues, $23 a year, will be accepted, and new members will be processed.

Bridge winners

LEWISTON – The Lewiston-Auburn Bridge Club winners at the Multi-Purpose Center on Jan. 10 were: first, David Lock and Luke Merry; second, Nancy Lindgren and Les Buzzell; third, Dick Allen and Pete Cummings; fourth, Nancy Farmer and Marta Clements; first in C, Cynthia Bonsey and Helen Little.

Winners at Schooner Estates in Auburn on Jan. 11 were: first, Paul Barber and Luke Merry; second, Tom Dahlberg and David Wallace; third, John Hackett and Ray Sirois.

The New England-wide special STaC games will be played at all sites next week. The Tuesday, Jan. 17, game will be held at 9 a.m. at the Multi-Purpose Center; the Monday, Jan. 16, game will be held at 9 a.m. at Schooner Estates; and the Wednesday, Jan. 18, game will be held at 7 p.m. at Schooner Estates.

Lincoln dinner

PORTLAND – The Cumberland County Lincoln Club will hold its 121st Lincoln Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 4. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, as well as the candidates for the Republican nomination for governor, have been invited.

Professor Joseph Reisert will be the featured speaker, comparing the crisis that Lincoln faced with the war on terrorism.

The dinner will be held at the Italian Heritage Center on Outer Congress Street. There will be a social hour beginning at 6 p.m. with piano music supplied by Charles Brown. Dinner will start at 7. Tickets are $25 a person and can be purchased by calling Cora Brown, 772-2443.

Spelling bee

LEWISTON – Holy Family Ladies Auxiliary will host an adult spelling bee at 6:30 p.m. Friday April 28, in the church hall, 607 Sabattus St. It is open to the public.

There will be a $1 admission for audience members, who will have a chance to win prizes. The top award will be $1,000.
