HUNTINGTON STATION, N.Y. (AP) – A woman was burned when she ran into a house fire on Sunday morning to rescue some of her family’s pet dogs, police said. A firefighter and another resident also were injured, and several pets were killed.

The Huntington Manor Fire Department responded to the blaze, which was caused by a clothes drying machine, around 10:30 a.m. and quickly put it out, but damage to the home was extensive.

Residents Georgette Geiger and Joseph Ingino, who suffered minor burns, were treated at a hospital and released, Suffolk County police said in a news release.

Geiger, 51, burned her head, police said. Ingino, 31, burned his hand while leaving the building.

A firefighter, suffering from smoke inhalation, was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment and was admitted for observation.

The fire, at 1 Teddy Court, was accidental, arson detectives said.
