BUCKFIELD – The town will need a licensed plumbing inspector within the year if Kay Hawkins steps down, Town Manager Glen Holmes told selectmen Tuesday night.

Holmes said he did not have an official resignation, but Hawkins has informed him she did not plan to renew her license at the end of the year.

Asking Holmes, who already serves as code enforcement officer, road commissioner and dozens of other jobs, to be trained for the position was not agreeable to the board.

Selectman Skip Stanley said the board did not want to get Holmes in the same position that former Town Manager Cindy Dunn found herself in as she tried to juggle too many jobs.

Holmes asked the board if now was also the time to consider getting a building code inspector.

“This position could be lumped together with the code enforcement officer and (licensed plumbing inspector),” he said.

Holmes said Androscoggin Valley Council of Governments is considering having a code enforcement officer for hire and perhaps a licensed plumbing inspector as well. The fee would be $35 an hour.

Selectman Chris Hayward said the town didn’t need someone who wasn’t local.

Both Hayward and Stanley, who are contractors, agreed that when they wanted an inspector, they wanted them as soon as possible.

In other business, Holmes reviewed a report from a December inspection by the State Safety Works from the Department of Labor. They found 16 issues, ranging from the need to have an evacuation diagram posted in the building to fixing an electrical panel cover in the basement of the Municipal Building. Holmes said everything would be fixed within the six-month grace period.

The board accepted with regret the resignation of Richard Clark from the Road Committee.

The board appointed Jason Haley and Kenneth Hicks to the Planning Board for five years each.

Reminders were given of the regionalization meeting at 6 p.m. today at the municipal building with Sumner and Hartford; and the Oxford County Municipal Officers Association meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 25 at the American Legion Hall.
