POLAND – The Patriot Grandstand Club, sponsors of Gray-New Gloucester Patriot Football, will hold its third annual ice fishing derby on Saturday, Feb. 4, on Middle and Upper Range Ponds.

This year the derby is also a Hooked On Fishing – Not on Drugs Learn to Fish event, providing an opportunity for area youth to participate and learn about ice fishing.

Hooked On Fishing – Not on Drugs is a nationwide youth educational tool that promotes youth and family togetherness through fishing.

A portion of the proceeds from the derby will benefit the program, which is operated by the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Fishing will begin a half hour before sunrise and end at 4 p.m. The weigh-in station will be at the Flying Lobster Restaurant on Route 26 at the end of Middle Range Pond. The Learn to Fish program will begin at 8 a.m. Ice fishing traps and bait will be available.

In the adult division, first prize is an ice shelter, valued at $300; second prize, $150; and third, $100. In the youth division, first prize is a $50 gift certificate; second, $25 gift certificate; and third, $15 gift certificate. There will be door prizes drawn throughout the day.

Tickets are $7 for adults and $3 for youth 12 and under, with a family maximum of $15.

Any youth participating in the Learn To Fish program must purchase a derby ticket.

Tickets are available at Dag’s Bait Shop in Auburn, Mooney’s Bait Shop in New Gloucester and Allen’s Country Store in Cumberland. On the day of the derby, tickets will be available at the Flying Lobster Restaurant on Middle Range Pond and at the boat ramp on Upper Range Pond.
