Book discussion
AUBURN – Join the Auburn Public Library at the Auburn Mall for the first program of its 2006 book discussion series. This month’s discussion will be on “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 31, with a snow date of Feb. 1.
The book is set in Afghanistan and spans the period before the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan until its reconstruction after the fall of the Taliban.
Hosseini explores the Afghan culture by telling the story of Amir, the son of a wealthy businessman, and how, as a young boy, he betrays his servant and best friend, Hassan.
It is this ghost of betrayal and shame that haunts Amir through his teen years into adulthood. It is only as an adult, after immigrating to the United States with his father, that he finally faces and rectifies the consequences of his youth.
Copies of the book are available at the Auburn Public Library; call 782-3191 to reserve a copy.
